Pulling Materials to Support Knowledge

For two and a half years I have been studying about family engagement... there is so much great research that I could share with these teachers.  I have been struggling with honing in on (only) three hours worth.  What do they need MOST?

Then the answer(s) started revealing itself.  As I interviewed each of the six teachers I found common themes they would like to focus on - disengaged families, language barriers, and poverty.  With the research I have collected these areas may prove to support their growth in looking at how they engage families.  I'm looking forward to our first session next week!

The beginning...

I had my first interview with a Year 1 teacher this week.  It was pretty eye opening - and I am so excited for the opportunity that lies ahead.  During a 15 minute interview her feedback eloquently and succinctly summed up my research: Our beginning teachers have inadequate training to engage families.

The next two months will provide an amazing opportunity, both as a researcher and participant learning about what beginning teachers need to work with families.  I am excited and nervous - I feel a heavy sense of responsibility to do this at a level that WILL help each of these teachers engage families in a deeper way!
